Fair Weather Friend

"Blue, blue jeans I wear them every day / There's no particular reason to change / My thoughts are getting banal, I can't help it / But I won't pull out hair another day / & don't think I'm walking out of this / She don't mind / Whatever I say... / I don't really want to change a thing / I want to stay this way" - Blur, Blue JeansJ.Crew shirt (last worn HERE). Urban Outfitters bloomers (last worn HERE). Vintage necklace. Chanel shoes.
Fair Isle bloomers are my fair weather friend, especially worn with blue jean baby shirt. Sun rose on water-scarred earth as I trotted down Madison for dress-fitting to my BFF's wedding - perks of being bridesmaid.

Josephine March

LITTLE LACE: Helmut Lang tux in April 2011 Glamour (LEFT) & March 2011 Harper's Bazaar (RIGHT)
I'm on the fence about this ivory lace shorts suit shot by Glamour last spring but certainly love their cropped topper alone. Think YSL Le Smoking meets New Wave punk in the arms of an urban modern Victorian bride.
Helmut Lang tux (last worn HERE). Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Josephine' dress (last worn HERE). Vintage ring. Chanel wedges.
Tea length dress gradates grey to peach, dotted with diamanté. Colonial girls wore pattens (platform shoes) to step above dirty streets. Today's perfect for these wedges, puddle-jumping empty sidewalks after hurricane.

Marc Jacobs dress (last worn HERE). Vintage belt. Urban Outfitters ring. Miu Miu shoes.
Calm before storm - waiting for my first hurricane, biding time in frock painted with Gauguin's tropical flora in Easter bonnet colors. Threw my legs over couch to comfortably admire Miu Miu jeweled flats & catch up on stack of fall fashion magazines. Frustrating to lust after necessities not in shops yet, all closed until Monday.
"Suddenly I turned around & she was standin' there / With silver bracelets on her wrists & flowers in her hair. / She walked up to me so gracefully & took my crown of thorns. / Come in, she said, / I'll give you shelter from the storm... / Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it" - Bob Dylan, Shelter From the Storm

Peeping Tom

Cooperative dress (last worn HERE). Vintage headpiece & jewelry. Valentino espadrilles.
Watch me leave - back is the new black. Business in front, party behind, in my peekaboo peephole dress, stretchy with smocked stripes & dotted silk. What has nude leather bows, contrast stitching, ankle straps?
The Valentino platform espadrilles I wore all summer like they were going out of style. Loved when they debuted last year but dragged my feet about acquiring them. Luckily they were reintroduced to me this season.

Anna Sui dress (last worn HERE). Vintage jewelry. Valentino espadrilles.
Grapefruit flesh frock, all flowery twirl, paired with dreamcatcher necklace, feathered in same peachy-keen shade. Vintage bracelet: braided strands of gold remind me to book appointment at Bergdorf's Braid Bar.
Braids are the newest beauty service offered at the John Barrett Salon, crowning the best store in the world. Styles are supposed to last three days & I'm already planning looks: Heidi milkmaid or little mermaid fishtail.

Leda & the Swan

Haute Hippie dress. Vintage bracelets. Tory Burch sandals.
Haute Hippie swan dive dress - A-line silhouette in breezy gauzy cotton. Embroidered all over, including banded empire waist. Button-down placket & standup collar craft picture of wholesome 1950s housewife.
These designs travel from city to country - my new destination for chicly comfortable vacation clothes. Haute Hippie is aptly named for luxe vintage aesthetic. Especially love layering - see silk petticoat here.

Lemon Ice

Catherine Malandrino dress (last worn HERE). Vintage necklaces & Liberty of London scarf. Chanel shoes.
Laser lace dress, sweetly tart as Italian lemon ice I licked on church steps. Worn with vintage rhinestone necklaces & Liberty scarf, whose label identifies it as bought in Bermuda - chintzy floral dated to 1950s.
Searching for objects of beauty on Museum Mile. Ducked into park to read Steve Martin's book on the subject & feed birds berries. High school French + handsome tourist = romantic convo about weather.

Striped Bass

"All day I've built / a lifetime & now / the sun sinks to / undo it... / I wonder about / this lifetime with myself, / this dream I'm living. / I could eat the sky / like an apple / but I'd rather / ask the first star: / why am I here? / why do I live in this house? / who's responsible?" - Anne Sexton, The Fury of Sunsets
Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Simone' dress (last worn HERE). Vintage belt, headpiece, necklace. Chanel booties.
Sunset circle dress, striped in gradients of skylarks & finished with feather cap. Park picnic-worthy day: raided farmer's market for fresh air & settled on emerald bed to observe cloud castles obscure blue view.

Sky's the Limit

3.1 Phillip Lim dress (last worn HERE). Vintage jewelry. Valentino espadrilles.
Best dressed in a patch of sky, adorned with Victorian cameo caught in dreamcatcher necklaces. Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again... So speaks the heroine in Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca.
Predisposed to love the novel that shares my name, I regularly re-read it but only saw the film with Joan Fontaine last night. Later I dreamt in black & white for the first time, awakening to sunlight in my eyes.

Glow in the Dark

Anna Sui dress (last worn HERE). Vintage jewelry, clutch, YSL espadrilles.
I spy with my little eye, two globular clusters: a glinting, squinting sapphire flower ring & a rhinestone knobby clasped clutch in satin. Blinded by the light - this phosphorescent frock glows green in the dark.
Can't stop: sipping on chamomile, carrying my Lulu Guinness umbrella, cleaning closets & playing dress-up in video montages, window-shopping (& blissfully buying), breaking-in boots around my apartment.

The Blue Geranium

MLLE: Carven fall 2011, look #10
Founded in 1940s for insouciant ingénues, Carven creates pertly proper clothes for Gallic gamines. Guillaume Henry lovingly models his helm at the label on a best dressed jet-setting bookworm (my fashion fantasy). Free spirited fall 2011 presentation is best yet, full of signature brainy bourgeois pieces.

Carven dress. Vintage belt & rings. Valentino espadrilles.
Faded cornflower blue lace frock stars in Carven's lookbook this season. Thoughtful details include wrap bodice, scalloped hemline, exposed back zipper up solid fabric back. Cinched waist cries for belt - see Greek gold link buckle. Even bracelet sleeves seem French, testament to carelessly worn-in perfection.

"Am I to become profligate as if I were a blonde?... / St. Serapion, I wrap myself in the robes of your whiteness / which is like midnight in Dostoevsky. How I am to become a / legend, my dear? I've tried love... / It is easy to be beautiful; it is difficult to appear so" - Frank O'Hara, Meditations in an Emergency
Milly dress (last worn HERE). Vintage jewelry. Miu Miu shoes.
My college poetry professor introduced me to O'Hara's Meditations long before it appeared on Mad Men. O'Hara writes about 1950s NY life, but his words haunt me as I walk the same streets today. Here I borrow his St Serapion's robes of whiteness, spinning them with spiderwebs of silver diamanté dewdrops.

Tulip Time Festival

YELLOW FLAVOR: van Gogh, Sunflowers (ABOVE) & Warhol, Banana from The Velvet Underground & Nico (BELOW)
Tulip Time Festival frock makes me contemplate mellow yellow: van Gogh's signature Sunflowers & Warhol's Banana print from The Velvet Underground & Nico's 1967 album cover. My favorite fruit icon is the strategically placed pineapple on the sultry swimsuits in Stella McCartney's Chloé spring 2001 show.
Anna Sui shift (last worn HERE). Vintage jewelry. Chanel shoes.
When I was a little girl, I planted a single sunflower at my country house in CT & watched it grow taller than me over the course of a summer. Then I harvested its seeds, stored them in an antique gourd & promptly forgot about them until recently, when I ransacked my attic in search of family heirlooms.

Stick 'Em Up

3.1 Phillip Lim dress (last worn HERE). Style Rev 'La Rosa' scarf (courtesy of designer). Vintage bracelets. Chanel clogs.
Tied this scarf bandana-style, like cowboys in country western movies. They pull it over their mouth to avoid dust while horseback riding or as a disguise to rob banks. I wear it like a warm-hearted necklace.
This pink rose scarf is the second one Style Rev (shop HERE) sent - see the purple beauty yesterday. Love how lightly sheer flowers peep through fabric yet powerfully glow when folded into layers over LBD.

Apron Strings

Anna Sui dress (last worn HERE). Style Rev 'La Rosa' scarf (courtesy of designer). Vintage rings. Valentino espadrilles.
Style Rev (shop HERE) is bringing scarves back. The online boutique is gaga about this old fashioned accessory that's been overlooked for too long. Together, we're staging a revival. After noticing my passion for swaths of silk, they sent me several floral motifs, including this large square of purple roses.
Satin stripes run across this scarf's ombré dark edges fading into light center. I knotted it around my waist like a homespun apron, ready to bake some sunrise muffins. The scarf's dramatic blowsy blossoms echo my frock's more precise flowers; mixing prints is easy as apple pie when similar patterns share a palette.

It's a Sunshine Day

Vintage headpiece, dress (last worn HERE), Rotvonni sunnies. YSL bag. Miu Miu sandals.
Sunflower dress & straw bag for summer day. Dinner plans at cozy country inn - best part is peeking in impeccably curated gift shop, full of things one forgets to pack that are treasures in their own right.I souvenir shop at the least provocation but with purpose. Not least because it provides cocktail chatter: What, this old thing? Bought it at Le Bon Marché, darling. You simply must go next time you're in Paris.
