Ticket to Ride

Vintage bangles.
Valentino boots.
Rebecca Taylor dress. Chanel earrings.
Valentino's floral appliqué biker boots are the season's best: they put petal to the pedal with studded rosettes springing from leather legs. Think Frye boots gone girlie thanks to straps buckling the instep/shaft & stacked riding heels - they inspire me to motorcycle across an old western town. I've been knocking about in them everywhere because I love their contrast with my feminine frocks... Here they're paired with a smoky silk dress from Rebecca Taylor's resort 2011 collection, which also blossoms with flora floating across its ruffles & rolled short-sleeves. It scrunches into a mere scrap of nothingness off the hanger, which is ideal for travel as I always overlook wrinkles. My friend calls it the Avenue Montaigne Dress after the charming ingénue's style in the titular French film; it reminds me of a modern Gigi girl - sweet Leslie Caron sauntering through Montmartre or Jardin du Luxembourg.

Spiderweb Dress

Vintage necklace. Banana Republic ring.
Vintage dress & Miss Ashley belt (worn backward). Marc by Marc Jacobs slip. Chanel oxfords.
"Pretty little girl on the side of the road / Yellow hair in a yellow bow / Little thumb sticking in the exit lane / Two packs of smokes & a candy cane / With women hips & baby lips / A hallelujah book in the back of a pillow-slip / If she gets out of here too soon / She'll run fast by the shy of the moon / If she's been havin' the same old dreams / Of lullabies & pale blue skies" - The Wallflowers, Shy of the Moon
My 1950s nylon dress began life as an undergarment, but now it's the perfect gossamer frock when paired with a slip (or bikini cover-up when not). Its diaphanous layers are like cobwebs: transparent textures show sheer in sunlight & tear easily - wearer beware. This Oriental bottle is a souvenir from my mom's island vacation decades ago; its wildly romantic (secret) origins inspire me to carry it close to my heart.

Fur Flasher

3.1 Phillip Lim fall 2010 fashion show, look #32
Chanel 'Shopping' bag (on doorknob).
3.1 Phillip Lim trench. Vintage Marty Gutmacher tunic & Jcracker's boots.
My fur-lined trench coat is pure luxury, forging practicality with decadence: the snuggly rabbit safely housed inside is impermeable to snow showers - I love that its fur isn't removable but literally entrenched within the trench. Its buckled belt & exposed gold asymmetric zipper fasten the front to form a fetching slit over one leg. 3.1 Phillip Lim gave this perennially chic coat a deluxe makeover in his fall 2010 fashion show: look #32 starred the trench with a pair of black trousers & dark clutch. This stone-cold style is forever classic with nothing or anything underneath (naughty or nice); I adhered to the runway's black legs with opaque tights but brightened up with a floral fireball chintz tunic. I also carried my biggest Chanel bag & kicked around the country in these vintage cowboy boots to visit a holiday bazaar.

Ghost Story

Vintage necklaces.
3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Miu Miu Mary Janes.
"She stands before you naked / you can see it / you can taste it / but she comes to you light as the breeze / You can drink or you can nurse it / it don't matter how you worship / as long as you're / down on your knees... / & she dances so graceful / & your heart's hard & hateful / & she naked / but that's just the case / & you turn in disgust / from your hatred & from your love" - Billy Joel, Light as the Breeze
Pirate Princess of Penzance lands ashore in sun-bleached antique lace to pillage a petrified Hawaiian lei & egg-cream pearls & then sail away again anywhere but here far & away. My crochet dress from 3.1 Phillip Lim's resort 2010 collection is light & breezy enough for a rock chick to cruise both beach town & urban paradise. I wear it dancing in the moonlight by the seashore paved in seashells under an audience of starry night sky. Fair skinned + dressed in white = The Ghost Who Walks out of this world.

Greetings Shoppers on our holiest day of the year: Black Friday. Although I love shopping, I wouldn't set foot in a store today for fear of being trampled by bargain-hunters - much better to shop pre-sale or online. The white version of my turn-around studded dress was included in Oct 2009 Teen Vogue; its armored shell makes me feel like a powerful force of fashion - Xena: Warrior Princess or Joan of Arc celebrating victory. A chained fish belt + crowned heart necklace = pot of gold over the rainbow.
Muchas gracias to Marta de la Calzada @ Vanidad magazine for her adorable article peeping into my closet, my life in their Nov 2010 issue with singer Coco Sumner on the cover. The online story has an excerpt of our Spanish interview & some at-home photos, but pick up a print copy for my full feature.

Snow Job

Vintage rings & Changette brooch (at waist).
Vintage blouse & scarf (worn as skirt). Marc by Marc Jacobs slip. Chanel oxfords.
"You'll remember me when the west wind moves / Upon the fields of barley / You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky / As we walk in the fields of gold / So she took her love / For to gaze awhile / Upon the fields of barley / In his arms she fell as her hair came down / Among the fields of gold / Will you stay with me, will you be my love / Among the fields of barley" - Sting, Fields of Gold
Happy Thanksgiving! My family's tradition is to dine at a fancy restaurant; this year we lunched midtown at Casa Lever. I went for the gold in antique lace: a draped blouse & scalloped scarf (tied around my waist like a skirt with the ends cascading in front like a mermaid's ruffle). This scarf-skirt is pinned together with a Changette brooch, which slides open to store $ inside. My outfit's pleasingly reminiscent of a wedding dress & I might save this scarf to wear as a veil to mine - I already have plenty of "something old".

Sweater Sweetheart

Vintage rings. Ralph Lauren 'Bikini' bag.
Ralph Lauren sweater. ADAM skirt. H&M barrettes. Miu Miu shoes.
Twas the night before Thanksgiving, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse... The Holiday Sweater Club is Heaven with a soft dress code - sweaters are coziness incarnate. Fancy frocks + chunky cardigans are a winning combo for winter festivities; consider a classic cream cashmere cable-knit + red pleated skirt (from ADAM's fall 2010 fashion show). I pilfered this pullover from my mom's vast collection (The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe's-worth of shelves folded with downy softness). The nook where I'm ensconced is one corner of my apartment's hallway, which resembles an English country house with muted floral wallpaper & a forest plaid sofa (I decorate in the same fashion as I dress: an eccentric mix of old world prints). I often read away a winter's dreary here, but these photos were snapped before I sliped out with my Ralph Lauren 'Bikini' bag in tow. It's a mini hot cocoa-colored leather saddlebag with a strap looong enough to wear sideways even over a coat.
