Cotton Candy Circus

Ralph Lauren jacket. Vintage belt, rings & Maggi dress. Betsey Johnson pin. Chanel shoes.
"I know a girl who's soft & sweet / She's so fine, she can't be beat / Got everything that I desire / Sets the summer sun on fire / I want Candy, I want Candy / Go to see her with her hair hung down / Ain't no finer girl in town / Candy's just what the doctor ordered" - The Strangeloves, I Want Candy
Happy Halloween! Clothes or candy? I choose clothing every time - it never goes stale & sometimes becomes better with age... I've had my classic navy sport coat forever but am newly in love with it after admiring my friend wear hers over both a floral romper & sweater with leggings. It's part of every prep schoolboys' closet & mine because it's versatile as a black tuxedo jacket & especially suitable for casual excursions. Vintage is a prime example of a time fighter: this strawberry shortcake gingham frock becomes punky paired with a nude grommet belt (1950s & 1980s respectively).

Anna Sui dress. Vintage belt, ring & scarf (on railing). Chanel shoes.
"The Silver Shoes,' said the Good Witch, 'have wonderful powers. & one of the most curious things about them is that they can carry you to any place in the world in three steps & each step will be made in the wink of an eye. All you have to do is to knock the heels together three times & command the shoes to carry you wherever you wish to go" - L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
My schoolgirl dress (from Anna Sui's spring 2010 RTW fashion show) is sweet as Candy paired with the Girl from Oz's ruby slippers. Dorothy wears silver shoes in L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz but red ones in the movie The Wizard of Oz. Ruby slippers are far superior to silver ones... It's fitting that these iconic accessories comes from the film, not book; perhaps it took a costume designer to appreciate the Technicolor possibilities of crimson footwear - I can't imagine more romantic soles.

Night of a Thousand Stars

3.1 Phillip Lim resort 2009 RTW collection, look #11
3.1 Phillip Lim jacket. Feather Bone dress. Miu Miu shoes.
My style is founded on the juxtaposition of designer with vintage & fancy with plain pieces... This paillette-bedecked cardigan-jacket is the pièce de résistance of look #11 from 3.1 Phillip Lim's resort 2009 RTW collection: styled to heart pounding perfection with a nonchalantly striped t-shirt. Here I wear the glittery jacket with nothing but a beachcomber dress, even temporarily abdicating jewelry to temper flash with simplicity. It's my hero in shining stars - twinkling & twirling rainbows. I feel invincible wearing the embodiment of my Stylessence: say-it-with-a smile, Happy-Go-Lucky, throw-it-on-&-go. I reverently revel in its satisfyingly tactile texture but confess to carelessly shedding a sequin or two. My sartorial soulmate welcomes subsequent sparklers with open arms, including two more coats & innumerable shimmer-kissed frocks - too much is never enough.

Paper Crochet

Moschino Cheap & Chic fall 2010 RTW fashion show, look #22
Moschino Cheap & Chic skirt (worn as dress). Vintage ring & necklace (worn as belt). Anthropologie necklace. Miu Miu shoes.
Moschino Cheap & Chic's fall 2010 RTW fashion show was a fantasy about all the different women staying at a hotel (the brand recently opened one in Milan). Vacation + hotels = adventure + new homes (or at least homes away from Home). I adore traveling to the airport with only a passport & shopping on the Otherside for sartorial souvenirs. Inspired by Moschino Cheap & Chic's trademark tongue-in-chic upbeat regalia, I reinterpreted look #22 from the show: Biker Babe Model becomes Citified Flower Child by hiking up a skirt into a dress & adding some sweetheart accessories. Simply adjusting a skirt to a frock ushers it to the softer side of life - ever notice how strapless dress codes celebrate happy occasions? My enamel owl necklace's plumage is as colorful as a parrot's, but he wisely flies close to his nest of scalloped fabric crocheted with daisies. La Dolce Vita at Hotel California has me jonesing for a bon voyage...

The Jungle Book

Rebecca Taylor sweater. Betsey Johnson skirt. Vintage Miss Ashley belt (worn backward). Miu Miu shoes.
My penchant for prints begets a whimsical pastiche: eccentric English country rose meets bohemian genteel gypsy. Here Dries Van Noten's fall 2010 RTW fashion show inspired my marriage of leopard to flora (an original proposal resulting in ♥true love♥)... This docile animal top treads softly on cashmere paws in a powder-puff palette; I loved its muted spots so much several seasons ago that I also acquired the sweater-dress version. Leopards live in the dark jungle ergo my skirt's gothic garden completes the picture of wildlife passion; its spider web hem tickles my legs like Tarzan's Jane reincarnating her Victorian trousseau. This haphazard necklace could come from Jane's collection too; I'm mesmerized by its found object-quality - a treasure chest's muddled charms coalesced into the ultimate keepsake.

Meet Cute

Boy Meets Girl founder/creative director Stacy Igel & me at her showroom (above photo by Boy Meets Girl)
Boy Meets Girl dress (worn backward). Vintage jewelry. Chanel shoes.
I was delighted to see Boy Meets Girl founder/creative director Stacy Igel last week at her eco-chic cardboard showroom, where the brand's contemporary sportswear reclines in all its glory - my interview's on her blog, Stacy Igel. Here I'm wearing a Boy Meets Girl's fall 2010 t-shirt dress backward (to display its painted heart & exposed zipper); the rolled sleeves/boat-neck + lace hem evoke the sportiness of designers Alexander Wang's spring 2010 RTW fashion show + eternal girlishness of Betsey Johnson's collections. Our relationship is kismet: Stacy spotted me carrying my Boy Meets Girl tote on a style site & now I'm happily collaborating with this fashionable powerhouse - I ♥ a chic businesswoman.
P.S. The pink ribbon Boy Meets Girl bag in my photo with Stacy is available at Urban Outfitters & benefits a breast cancer charity; may it bring everyone the good luck mine brought me.

Lady of the Lake

3.1 Phillip Lim resort 2009 RTW collection, look #10
3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Vintage belt, bangles & necklace (in hair). Miu Miu Mary Janes.
"Wait for me I have to go now / Into the big city / She pulls me firmly towards her / Wait for me underneath the water / Wait for me here / You'll be fine underneath the water / I'll be back early next summer / We met again at the lake / After all these years, / You said "want a drink?" - Bjork, Water
My iceberg frock was look #10 (albeit in lime) from 3.1 Phillip Lim's resort 2009 RTW collection. This capsule wardrobe was one of Mr. Lim's best seasons, channeling Coco Chanel's beloved Deauville (her boutique premiered in France's chichi resort town) with classic cardigan-jackets & nautical references. These iconic items appeal to both Bright Young Things & their mothers - this is my Mom's favorite Phillip Lim piece; she suggested I buy the blue one instead of green. I've worn this breezy elegant cocktail dress everywhere from splashing along Westport, CT's waterfront to strolling NYC's concrete streets.
