Valentino espadrilles in April 2010 W
Vintage lace top. Bandeau bikini. Calvin Klein belt. Vintage flower headpiece. Pearl necklace. Vintage wood necklace worn as bracelet. Silver cuff (a souvenir from my sister’s trip to Israel). Valentino espadrilles (on cushion).
Memorial Day: summer started with the perfect sunny day, including: 1) a bikini (tangerine bandeau with coral strings), 2) a book (Lisa See's Shanghai Girls - I love Asian historical novels) & 3) a pair of sandals (beige leather platform espadrilles with a 5+" wedge-heel, an ankle-strap & a bow on the toe). Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin photographed these shoes on model Raquel Zimmermann in April W.
P.S. Happy Birthday Mom! My present to her was a navy chiffon Chanel scarf; later we're going to sip lemonade & watch the sunset on a country inn's verandah (inspiration: the 1930s Southern belles in Rebecca Wells' book Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood).

The Golden Lady

3.1 Phillip Lim resort 2010 collection, look #6
3.1 Phillip Lim dress in December 2009 InStyle
Vintage eyelet blouse. 3.1 Phillip Lim skirt. Vintage feather headpiece. Locket necklace. Vintage costume pearl necklace worn as bracelet. Sergio Rossi sandals.
Look #6 from 3.1 Phillip Lim's resort 2010 RTW collection: a gloriously gilded lace dress featured in several fashion editorials (including on actress Noot Seear in Dec InStyle), but Mr. Lim didn't manufacture the frock beyond samples because its material tends to snag. However, this fabric was deemed successful in a skirt; here it's supersweet with an eyelet blouse & slightly subverted with a pair of leopard ponyhair peep-toe sandals. I collect lockets because I'm charmed by their Victorian purpose: wearing the photograph of someone special is sentimental yet still relevant. My necklace is two lockets strung together: the dark floral oval is by Betsey Johnson & the gold diamond heart is engraved with 'Love Poppy' (a gift from my dad's father).

Heart & Soul

Cynthia Steffe dress. Ribbon necklace worn as headband. Elephant necklace. Bamboo & wood bangles. Sock Theory thigh-highs. Delman shoes.
I love a leggy look: this crochet tunic-cum-dress + a pair of striped heart thigh-highs = mile-long legs. Two necklaces, two ways: 1) silver belle pearls woven with ribbon (Lanvin-wannabe) worn as a headband & 2) snake-charming animals (best friends: ivory elephant & filigree dove) worn the traditional way.
My thigh-highs are courtesy of Sock Theory's website... This female-owned boutique specializes in trendy legwear, proving sexy stockings exist beyond fishnets. Printed tights are a winter necessity, but now I'm stocking up on knee socks & thigh-highs for summer evenings by the shore & in the mountains. I scored a coupon code to share: reference 'SHESAYS' at checkout to save 10% off orders $25+. Happy shopping!

Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal

Vintage Rayna’s blouse. Hanes top. Twenty8Twelve skirt. Vintage flower brooch. Vintage 1928 & chain necklaces. Vintage mosaic & rock bracelets. Black tights. Chanel ballerinas.
"The mirror crack'd from side to side; / 'The curse is come upon me,' cried / The Lady of Shalott... / Lying, robed in snowy white / That loosely flew to left & right - / The leaves upon her falling light - / Thro' the noises of the night, / She floated down to Camelot" - Alfred Lord Tenneyson, The Lady of Shalott
The Masterpiece Mystery! adaptation of Agatha Christie's book The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side inspired me to re-read Alfred Lord Tenneyson's poem The Lady of Shalott. The Lady & I are often "robed in snowy white" & a mirror is both our lifeline/curse (I'm never far from one - see the background for most of my indoor photographs). Today this mirror sends forth the reflection of a lovely lace blouse into the world; this top encourages me to lead the life of a proper gentlewoman - if only the Lady of Shallot was inspired to descend from her ivory tower before it was too late.

Princess of Darkness

Valentino Red dress. Vintage Perry Ellis scarf. Vintage gold bangle. Flower bag. Chanel ballerinas.
Fairy tale dragons are prone to kidnapping princesses until princes rescue them; in my real life fairy tale, I visit the dragon of my own volition... He lives in a spider web on the wrought iron door that guards an Ali Baba den of antiquities - land of happily-ever-after & my latest treasure resource. Today's princess costume: a tank dress spangled with starry sequins & hemmed with ruffled tulle trimmed with velvet ribbon. Two non-necklaces: 1) my rolled-up fish-printed scarf & 2) my flower purse’s chain strap (a delicate messenger bag fit for a pixie).

Barefoot in the Park

3.1 Phillip Lim spring 2010 RTW fashion show, look #24
3.1 Phillip Lim top. Milly camisole. Vintage Gloria Sachs skirt. Vintage flower headpiece. Vintage cameo necklace. Vintage twisted bangle. Vintage Majestron watch.
"I know a bank where the wild thyme blows, / Where oxlips & the nodding violet grows, / Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine, / With sweet musk-roses & with eglantine: / There sleeps Titania sometime of the night" - William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream
A silk paisley skirt + cropped sequin top = hippie by day, disco pixie at night... I drove to CT to start my holiday weekend early; I already lounged in the grass underneath an oak tree & tonight I'm going to a local pub in search of some square dancing or at least a jukebox. Best part of vacation so far: the emerald grass tickling my pink toes (color courtesy of Essie 'Funny Face').
