Disco Ball

3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Vintage costume pearl necklace worn as belt. Vintage costume pearl/diamond & pendant necklaces. Seashell (a souvenir from my trip to St. Thomas) & costume jeweled garland bracelets. Moss agate ring (a souvenir from my trip to St. Thomas). YSL ‘Muse’ bag. Prada platform sandals.
Why is this night different from all other nights? It's happy New Year time! Parts of the world already celebrated/composed resolutions (along the lines of be more/less of something) - my mantra is: don't worry, be happy (if all else fails, go shopping).
I'm living it up in a cerulean silk frock (the same color as the sky reflected in the ocean): its shoulders tie together & pleats cascade from its paperbag waist. I'm drawn to sparkle like a moth to a flame; my jewelry complements the dress' beaded bib (reminiscent of a Lanvin necklace). My first New Year's Eve in the tropics fulfills one of my goals: try something new everyday.

The Innocents Abroad

Ralph Lauren top. Miu Miu skirt. Vintage costume gold, pearl/diamond & tusk necklaces. Seashell (a souvenir from my trip to St. Thomas) & costume shadow facet bracelets. Turquoise ring (a souvenir from my trip to St. Thomas). Vintage woven bag. Prada platform sandals.
My outfit was inspired by Romola Garai's wardrobe in the movie Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights - halter dresses, sweetheart necklines & full skirts... I played the Innocent Abroad in a knit ruffled top & a Miu Miu pleated geometric skirt. Miu Miu (Prada's secondary line designed by Miuccia Prada) is exemplified by the insouciant gamine charm of the starlets featured in its ad campaigns. This purse belonged to my grandmother in her 1950's heyday when she attended teas/dances weekly; the hard, round, woven sack hangs from a rope handle & the inside is still scented with her perfume.

The Little Mermaid

Anna Sui top. Shoshanna heart string bikini. Vintage straw hat. Chanel star earrings. Vintage costume gold necklace. ‘Love’ & seashell bracelets (souvenirs from my trip to St. Thomas).
"We have lingered in the chambers of the sea / By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red & brown / Till human voices wake us, & we drown" - T.S. Elliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
Another beach, another (blue heart) bikini & a linen/lace top. Shoshanna Gruss designs girlish swimwear in whimsical prints; we shared a similar upbringing on NYC's Upper East Side & now her bathing suits/dresses clothe tropical travelers worldwide. There's something primeval about standing where the ocean licks land: it's a reminder of why the original civilizations were established near water (unlike today's communities that are convenient to transportation or adjacent to the right schools). Although there's cellular service along the shore, no one talks into their mobiles - it's as if we're all spellbound by the sea.

Jean-ie in a Bottle

Levi’s vest. Hanes top. Shoshanna skirt. Lake Shore Drive peace belt. Chanel star earrings. Vintage costume pearl necklace worn as bracelet. Vintage costume pearl heart & ‘Love’/seashell (souvenirs from my trip to St. Thomas) bracelets. Marc Jacobs ‘Ursula’ bag. Prada sandals.
My vest toughens up this swiss dot miniskirt - I bought it last summer to layer over my sundresses at the office. The denim vest is an urban take on the safari look; YSL's safari collection circa 1960 was synonymous with that time period & modeled by muses such as Veruschka & Betty Calroux/Loulou de la Falaise. My patchwork peace belt & 'Love' bracelet brought me good vibes when I explored St. Thomas - my apple green bowler bag shines with all of the treasure I procured there.

White Wedding

Jill Stuart dress. Vintage Ralph Lauren belt. Vintage wooden & dried flower necklaces. ‘Love’ & seashell bracelets (souvenirs from my trip to St. Thomas). Turquoise & moss agate rings (souvenirs from my trip to St. Thomas). Vintage Morris Moskowitz clutch. Manolo Blahnik sandals.
Ralph Lauren's Americana aesthetic inspired me to knot a silver belt over my eyelet dress; his advertising campaigns perpetuate a sumptuous cowboy lifestyle that induces city girls to dream of roaming happy trails... A day's worth of beachcombing garnered some seashells & trinkets: I bartered with a local vendor for two bracelets (one in red coral/snail shells + the other a 'Love' stone roped to a leather strap) & two oval rings (turquoise set in silver + moss agate speckled with red/yellow). Note the white stiched patent leather sandals - I'm not a high heels girl, but this pair wanted to walk the hotel's compound.

Sail Away

Fleur-de-lis bikini (top shown). Vintage Gloria Sachs skirt. Vintage tortoiseshell sunglasses. Vintage straw hat (on ground). Vintage costume pearl earrings. Vintage costume gold necklace. Vintage costume stone & Les Néréides crystal (a souvenir from my trip to Paris) bracelets. Marc Jacobs 'Ursula' bag (on ground).
"Sally sells seashells by the seashore. / The shells Sally sells are surely from the sea"
A few hours in the sky transported me from winter wonderland to island-in-the-sun St. Thomas... I strolled along the water's edge in a red fleur-de-lis string bikini & donned a brown paisley skirt as a coverup to lunch at the poolside restaurant. My other warm weather accessories include: a straw hat, a beach bag (I shopped my closet for an old green Marc Jacobs patent leather bowler) & an Agatha Christie mystery. A drawerful of jewelry + sunscreen don't mix well, but a few delicate baubles aren't remiss sparkling in the sun.

The Girl With One Red Coat

Marc by Marc Jacobs coat. Vintage Jack-Paul Waltzer Inc fur headband. Vintage costume stone earrings. Brown cable-knit tights. Vintage Gucci briefcase. Tory Burch ‘Winnie’ rain boots.
I feel like I stepped out of a Russian Christmas story in this Marc by Marc Jacobs' red coat... Mr. Jacobs makes the best outerwear - inevitably I'm tempted to buy a new winter coat every year; this one's lined in fleece, the collar & cuffs (which act as a muff) are made of coyote fur & toggle closures disguise a zipper. A vintage mink headband complements the coat's trim, while a red stripe on my bag brings out the coat's color. Today's a festive day (even for those of us who go to the movies) - family time spurred me to step into these rubber riding boots & take a stroll amid the remnants of last week's blizzard.

Caribbean Blue

Ralph Lauren cardigan. Anna Sui dress & sash. Flower duo headband. Vintage costume yellow pearl necklace. Kenneth Jay Lane flower ring. Black tights. Vintage Morris Moskowitz clutch. Roger Vivier shoes.
"Twas the night before Christmas..." - Clement Clarke Moore, A Visit from St Nicholas
The oceanic swirling colors on my long sleeved silk frock remind me of the Caribbean Sea, on whose shore I long to be. Brightly colored clothing is a sartorial substitute for the tropical sun - here I glow in a neon purple cashmere cable-knit cardigan, a royal blue leather clutch & an elongated strand of faded yellow pearls. Red/blue are festive colors for the holidays (but hopefully not reflective of our pocketbook/mood). Here's to health, wealth & happiness for the rest of 2009 & beyond - Merry Christmas!

Thoroughly Modern

3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Calvin Klein belt. Vintage costume pearl necklace worn as headband. Vintage costume gold & black/gold necklaces. Vintage costume stone bracelet. Costume amethyst ring. Hue leopard tights. Chanel ballerinas.
This Art Deco dress time-travels back to the Jazz Age, where bohemians abounded - such as Louise Brooks (a silent film siren) & Kiki de Montparnasse (a muse to photographer Man Ray). If we consider designer Paul Poiret to be Phillip Lim's forebearer (this frock is the navy version of look #21 from Mr. Lim's fall 2009 RTW fashion show), then my outfit could've graced either one of the aforementioned flappers. The dress' beading undulates over its batwing sleeves & scalloped hem (emphasized by a pair of kicky leopard tights), while a minimalist silver belt tailors the look a bit. Now if only I could find a speakeasy to practice my Charleston...

Purple Violets

Ralph Lauren sweater. Lina Tsai skirt. Vintage costume charm, painted pocket watch & pearl (a 13th birthday present) necklaces. Satellite mesh & shadow facet bracelets. Dolci Calze argyle tights. Chanel oxfords.
Today I masqueraded as a schoolgirl princess (Gossip Girl playing the young Queen Victoria)... Purple (the color of royalty) is represented by a cashmere cable-knit pullover & a pair of argyle tights; a pleated miniskirt printed with pink 'Gracie' girls twirls over a pair of patent leather oxfords; and some paste jewelry envelops my neck & wrist.
Good students get A's, but bloggers get features! First Erin from tog & trappings (we share a passion for Bernardo Bertolucci's movie, The Dreamers) shared some inspirational bloggers - I'm honored to make the list. Then Us Trendy (an online fashion community for fledgling designers) published an article I wrote on the 2009 Bal Crillon des Debutantes (which was noteworthy for a blogger's attendance (Jane from Sea of Shoes). Thanks so much to my readers & watchers.

Uptown Girl

Ralph Lauren cardigan. Marc by Marc Jacobs dress. Leopard print belt. Vintage costume pearl pendant necklace worn as headband. Vintage costume pendant necklace. Vintage costume mosaic & charm bracelets. Betsey Johnson houndstooth tights. Chloé 'Edith' bag. Chanel ballerinas.
This ensemble pops with bright colors (bubblegum-hued cashmere enlivens a gold lace dress) but is anchored by neutral shades (a ponyhair leopard print belt complements a pair of brown/white houndstooth tights). My Chloé 'Edith' bag is special not least because it shares a name with my mom, but it also reminds me of a photographer's satchel circa 1970.
Today's outfit is an homage to Brittany Murphy's character in the movie Uptown Girls, wherein she plays a champagne bubble of a girl leading a charmed life; I often employ her wardrobe/effervescence as a point of reference. Ms. Murphy's death shocked the world yesterday - she'll be remembered as a sparkly sprite both on & offscreen.

Maroon 5

Only Hearts top. Vintage Synonyme de Cearces Rech Paris skirt. Tulle bow headband. Vintage costume stone earrings. Vintage costume crystal & ribbon necklaces. Vintage costume gold bangle. Costume amethyst ring. Brown cable-knit tights. Vintage Lumured Corde Bead bag. Chanel ballerinas.
My outfit was inspired by the weather: autumn dissipating under a slew of snow... Maroon florals unite a cropped velvet top & a high waisted pleated skirt, while flashes of white peek out from my jewelry & purse. I smeared on some red lipstick & ventured out to see The Young Victoria; Emily Blunt is radiant in this movie, which is due in no small part to costume designer Sandy Powell's prowess. My love of period pieces culminates in their clothing (& reaches its apex with Milena Canonero, winner of the 2007 Oscar for Best Costume Design for Marie Antoinette).
Also it's worth noting Chictopia chose yesterday's outfit for their homepage again, making it two posts in a row - much thanks to Chictopia!

Heidi's Years of Wandering & Learning

Vintage Montgomery Ward coat. Bow barrette. Costume flower earrings. Moschino gloves. Vintage costume woven & jeweled garland bracelets. Tintoretta knit tights. Marc Jacobs 'Stam' bag. Loeffler Randall 'Riley' boots.
Here I wear the vintage coat I bought last week in all of its glory: matted fur/floral embroidery & brass clasps/bracelet sleeves (ideal for displaying bangles during the winter). I braved an incipient snowstorm like a lady in a pair of floral/bow gloves & an overgrown change purse of a bag (1 part biddy + 2 parts color = Marc Jacobs' success). Mr. Jacobs named this purse after model Jessica Stam, following Hermès' tributes to actress Grace Kelly/singer Jane Birkin with the Kelly/Birkin bags.
These pictures were snapped on the Met's steps en route to the Art of the Samurai (colorful chic armor) & The Americans (photographs of Robert Frank's 1955-6 roadtrip) exhibits. Saturday + culture = a smugly educated start to the weekend.

The Orient Express

3.1 Phillip Lim Mongolian fur chubby. Rebecca Taylor dress. Vintage costume pearl pendant necklace worn as headband. Vintage costume coin, dried flowers, filigree & silver (a souvenir from my sister’s trip to Israel) bracelets. Brown cable-knit tights. Vintage Travel Joy train case. Delman suede boots.
Justice Potter Stewart said, "I know it when I see it" in reference to pornography; I apply the same sentiment to shopping... I encountered this train case serendipitously at a CT town fair a few summers ago (I wasn't looking for such a case but knew I needed one when I saw it). It accompanies me when I feel like traveling the old fashioned way; together we channel classic movies such as the "ladies" from Some Like It Hot & Penny Lane from Almost Famous - she ironically carries it as a purse.
Here I donned a magnificent Mongolian fur jacket trimmed with a metallic beaded placket (it's the blonde version of look #14 from Phillip Lim's fall 2009 RTW fashion show). I draped it over this industrial negligee of a dress, added a wristful of bangles & wove some sparkly beads through my hair.
P.S. Today's outfit was selected for chictopia's homepage - check it out quickly below!

Ladies in Lavender

Cashmere cardigan. Valentino Red sequined dress. Kenneth Jay Lane snake belt. Costume jeweled garland & shadow facet bracelets. Hue knit polka dot tights. Vintage beige needlepoint bag. Loeffler Randall 'Matilde' boots.
I had a special place in my heart for everything pink long before Elle Woods (the heroine of the film Legally Blonde) declared it to be her signature color - I even went through a phase of incorporating pink into most of the outfits I wore when I was a little girl. Lavender is my favorite shade all grown up; this cardigan makes my sparkly organza frock more demure & complements these bracelets' prisms. I associate lavender with 1) Scarlett O'Hara from Margaret Mitchell's novel, Gone with the Wind (Ms. O'Hara taught me it's worn to indicate a lighter version of mourning) & 2) my internship at Betsey Johnson's showroom (Ms. Johnson nicknamed me "Lady in Lavender" in tribute to the tint of my top I wore on my first day there).

Sunshine Clearing

Piazza Sempione top. Milly dress (worn as skirt), slip & sash. Chanel snowflake earrings. Vintage costume ball necklace. Hue sweater tights. Chloé boots.
Here I layered a ruffled sweater over a lamé dress (I typically abhor all turtlenecks, but this frock's festive fabric compelled me to prepare for cold days); warming up with a pullover sweater on top of a dress is more visually stimulating than the expected cardigan... Still, I can't help stocking up on cashmere button-downs when I pass a certain Madison Ave boutique.
NY Magazine published their "Reasons to Love NY '09" issue this week, including #30 because "our newest power couples are people we might actually like" (my favorite pairing is Alex Turner/Alexa Chung - will she move back to London since MTV cancelled It's On with Alexa Chung?) & #35 because "this is the best place to be a young designer" (which spotlighted Sophie Théallet, recipient of this year's Vogue/CFDA award).

Def Leopard

Rebecca Taylor top. J Brand ripped jeans. Flower duo headband. Vintage costume crystal & pearl (a 13th birthday present) necklaces. Costume jeweled garland & shadow facet bracelets. Marc Jacobs bag. Miu Miu ballerinas.
Today my yoga teacher revealed that the transition into a pose is as important as the pose itself (which is analogous to how our daily decisions form our life). Applying this lesson to fashion means accessorizing with care... Here a 3/4 sleeved leopard print sweater + a pair of skinny ripped jeans create a glam-punk background for a prism necklace & some bejeweled/beribboned bracelets.
As a fan of patterned tights, I'm drawn to Oringina's blog (Fashion My Legs), which is devoted to the intricacies/delicacies of legwear. She recently interviewed me for a fabulous feature - visit her site to be inspired from the toes up... Thanks Oringina!

Hat-shepsut

3.1 Phillip Lim chubby. Anna Sui slip. Vintage woven belt. Vintage Bergdorf Goodman hat. Vintage costume leaf earrings. Vintage costume stone & moonstone rings. Emilio Cavallini crochet tights. Jil Sander bag. Lanvin ribbon ballerinas.
My favorite fur jacket is look #9 from Phillip Lim's fall 2009 RTW fashion show; it's blonder than me & is made of shaved shearling. To cozy up more than the chubby's large eyehooks permit, I cinched a woven lurex belt around my waist (I'm on the lookout for a vintage leather tie belt). A penchant for hats that don't flatten my hair drew me to this Bergdorf sanctioned taupe chapeau trimmed with a ribbon.
Recently The NY Times published several articles on Rent the Runway (a netflix for frocks): the first one offered general information on the new internet company, while the second story detailed the author's experiences with the website (apparently its dresses aren't on par with the designers featured on sites such as Bag Borrow or Steal). Note girls looking for a merry-go-round of outfits ultimately must be OK with an empty closet supplemented with a stack of Polaroids as the only proof they wore there...

Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps

Marc by Marc Jacobs coat. Deena & Ozzy corset belt. Antique lace scarf. Bow barrette. Chanel snowflake earrings. Costume flower ring. Floral tights. Chanel 'Maxi' bag. Chanel ballerinas.
Today I had a mission: find a new vintage winter coat... I've had this Marc by Marc Jacobs herringbone jacket since college; while I love its white fur collar, the twin frontal pockets & its big plastic buttons, I wanted something fresh for this season. My outfit morphs from mod to little lady with a lace scarf (I reappropriated my mom's wedding veil) & a beige Chanel purse/a pair of flats - the perfect pastiche for trekking through the East Village's vintage stores. Ultimately I found my soulmate in overcoat-form: it's a vintage Montgomery Ward wool camel coat, hooded, trimmed in fur/floral fabric & buckles closed - pictures coming soon...

Some Bunny

3.1 Phillip Lim bunny dress. Allison Daniel Designs buckle belt. Vintage costume pearl necklace worn as headband. Vintage costume gold necklace. Vintage costume gold/twisted & real gold (a 14th birthday present) bangles. Vintage amethyst/bow rings. American Apparel heart tights. Chanel ballerinas.
I had a white rabbit (named Snowy) as a pet when I was a little girl & this chiffon bunny dress reminds me of him. Similar to look #12 from Phillip Lim's fall 2009 RTW fashion show, the frock has a ruffled collar, a zippered bodice & flouncy 3/4 length sleeves. I accessorized it with a floral cowboy belt & a pair of heart tights/red patent leather ballerinas. Hordes of tourists overcrowd the sidewalks, but I'm able to blindly navigate my way home... Why are the sweetest holiday memories from childhood?

The Gilded Age

Anna Sui gilded dress, slip & belt. Vintage costume bow earrings. Vintage costume gold necklace. Vintage costume woven cuff. Vintage amethyst & bow rings. Knit crochet tights. Loeffler Randall "Matilde' boots.
Happy Hanukah! Tonight I'm attending a lecture by architectural historian Barry Lewis at the Met on "Shopping in the Gilded Age"; as an avid shopper/nostalgist, I'm excited to learn more about my 19th Century counterparts. This is the debut of my shimmery shirtdress (look #21 from Anna Sui's fall 2009 RTW fashion show); usually collared dreses are synonymous with conservative office attire, but this one is printed in an orange floral/paisley pattern set against a dark lurex background. I let the dress shine with black boots & minimal jewelry; however, it would also match perfectly with a certain pair of Roger Vivier heart flats (hint, hint)...

Holiday Honey

Schumacher bow cardigan. Marc by Marc Jacobs brocade dress. Turtle belt. Vintage costume blue beaded & pearl (a 13th birthday present) necklaces. Vintage costume woven cuff. Vintage costume animal ring. Hue navy cable-knit tights. Loeffler Randall 'Riley' boots.
Tonight I was invited to the Teen Vogue/Louis Vuitton (LV) party hosted by editor-in-chief Amy Astley & gadabout town Alexa Chung at the Fifth Ave store. I’ll indulge in a manicure (thanks Dior) & hopefully preview the LV spring 2010 RTW collection. Lara Stone (a latter-day Brigitte Bardot) is the face of LV’s spring 2010 campaign – we should all be so lucky as to spend our days in shady glens swathed in LV.
I paid homage to the holiday spirit by trussing myself up as a present in a velvet bow bedecked sweater over a gilded dress. These caramel knee high boots are one of my favorite pairs; I love the exposed zipper up the back & wear the boots fully extended to show it off (they also can be cuffed).

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Moschino Cheap & Chic top. 3.1 Phillip Lim ruffled skirt. Vintage flower headband. Vintage costume gold & yellow pearl necklaces. Vintage costume gold, peridot, twisted & real gold (a 14th birthday present) bangles. Betsey Johnson purple tights. Marc by Marc Jacobs mouse ballerinas.
Camel is a neutral color often overshadowed by black, navy & white; I only wear its dark iterations as beige can make porcelain skin seem paler than pale. This cashmere sweater personifies easy elegance: it puffs into princess sleeves & then settles into a demure v-neck. A pair of purple tights pops beneath the ruffled skirt, while my mouse flats “walk, walk fashion baby” (Lady Gaga, Bad Romance). This shoe style is a mainstay in the house of Marc by Marc Jacobs who fashions a pair of them almost every season (in rubber/leather/etc), but I prefer my furry pony-hair the best.

Red Fish Blue Fish

Cashmere cardigan. Twenty8Twelve dress. Marc by Marc Jacobs slip. Vintage fish clasps & Echo scarf worn as belt. Gold/turquoise earrings. Vintage costume ball/gold necklaces. Costume moonstone ring. Xhilaration polka dot tights. Chloé boots.
Today I stepped into a pair of electric blue tights (for energy) & hooked my fish belt around a simple cotton frock (for comfort). My day dawned with a dental checkup, whose office conveniently neighbors Barneys. The unopened store allowed me to thoroughly window-shop... Holiday windows are the pinnacle of retail showmanship; Barneys has an SNL theme this year, but my favorite windows peer out of Bergdorf. They're informed by Lewis Carroll's writings (author of Through the Looking Glass), which also inspired Syfy's mini-series Alice & Tim Burton's forthcoming film, Alice in Wonderland.
