Powerpuff Girl

See by Chloe top. Milly camisole. Juicy Couture cashmere skirt. Snake belt. Vintage costume bow earrings. Vintage costume chain necklace. Vintage amethyst & bow rings. Delman suede shoes.
I wish I had this white collared blouse when I wore a uniform in elementary school - I thought I would hate collared shirts forever after, but puff sleeves & ruffles charm me (modesty prevails with a silk camisole). My skirt begs for a twirl, so I indulge in some freestyle spinning before assuming a professional stance at a client meeting. The appointment also compelled me to restrain my usual layers of jewelry... I'm told my fashion sense can appear expensive/distracting in business situations, which makes me believe fashion should be my business.

The Velvet Underground

Marc by Marc Jacobs dress. Vintage Saks Fifth Ave chain belt. Bow headband. Vintage costume wood necklace. Vintage amethyst, bow & costume amethyst rings. Chanel shoes.
Another day, another dress... This one is chocolate velvet trimmed in white lace - I played up the Victorian doll look with my favorite bow headband. The parrot perching on my necklace (rescued from a town fair in CT) makes me smile, which is a plus in both fashion & life. I like the look of a knuckle full of rings - it's a classy way to appear ready to punch someone out... Dressing (like a little girl) to subvert people's expectations only works if you have the goods to back it up.

Bow to the Bow

Helmut Lang jacket (last worn HERE). 3.1 Phillip Lim dress (last worn HERE). Kenneth Jay Lane belt. H&M headband. Chanel shoes.
Today I wore an embellished dress with a crystal leather belt. A new year is best represented by new things: a lace bow headband & the ultimate ballet flats complete my look. As much as I love grandiose costume jewelry, sometimes a girl needs a real diamond - today my finger is graced with a family heirloom... Someday I hope to swan about in nothing but vintage gowns, jewels & fur.

Sunday Blues

Anna Sui jacket. 3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Betsey Johnson heart belt. Black bead necklace (a souvenir from my mom's trip to Ireland). Delman shoes.
I'm wearing a checkered dress cinched with a leather belt, tooled with hearts & studded in gold. My recent affinity for blue is akin to Picasso's blue period... Seasonal shifts are always tinged with melancholy. New clothes help to buoy my spirits - I currently desire to live in a Kate Spade ad, where characters exist in a bubbly Mad Men episode minus the sinister undertones. Aside from the shopping cure, I seem to be on the cusp of an epiphany as Sept fades into Oct...

The Caped Crusader

Vintage G Fox & Co cape. Hanes v-neck t-shirt. Sequined leggings. Vintage heart & ribbon necklaces. Gold (a 14th birthday present) bangle. Vintage stone bracelet. Vintage amethyst & bow rings. Vintage Coach bag. Delman velvet shoes.
I'm wearing two of my best finds (the cape & the purse) from tag sales in CT, which I love to frequent while visiting my family there. I bought the mink cape together with a fox jacket from a biddy who was moving to a warmer climate. First drawn to this purse when I mistook it for an Hermès 'Kelly' at an estate sale, I appreciate the bag for its lack of typical Coach buckles. It took me awhile to embrace leggings - my first pair masquerades as fitted, sparkly evening pants.
Today I took in the Vermeer exhibit at the Met, which centers around The Milkmaid (on loan to the USA for only the second time). One of my favorite paintings from the museum's collection (Study of a Young Woman) is also on display; the work evokes the Girl with a Pearl Earring, which in turn inspired Tracy Chevalier's novel & the titular film. As an art history major in college, I value live models' contribution toward breaking the fourth wall between subject & audience.

Invested in Fur

Fur vest. Sonia by Sonia Rykiel top. Shoshanna skirt. Linea Pelle belt. Vintage costume crystal necklace. Costume flower ring. Salvatore Ferragamo 'Varina' shoes.
This haute hippe cum French gamine look features a faux fur vest layered over a striped bow t-shirt & a white skirt. The equestrian belt has clinched many an outfit - it saves my waist from potential boxiness. Bright colors are so cheering, especially when they're worn on the feet; these pink patent leather flats' classic biddy chicness makes me smile.
I love Sonia Rykiel's designs & Loic Prigent's The Day Before (a documentary series that follows four designers for 36 hours before their runway shows) confirmed my feelings. I purchased the black Paris 68 cardigan from Ms. Rykiel's boutique on the rue des Saint-Pères during my last trip to Paris.

The Girl in the Pink Scarf

See by Chloe dress. Turtle belt. Vintage Adrienne Vittadini scarf. Vintage costume ball necklace. Vintage costume gold bangle. Vintage costume mosaic, stone & Les Néréids crystal (a souvenir from my trip to Paris) bracelets. YSL 'Muse' bag. Lanvin suede shoes.
Here I am at the bus stop on 79th Street & Madison Ave near the end of the day wearing an eyelet dress. It's officially autumn, yet my summer clothes remain sans fall layers (tights & cashmere). As I wear a belt nearly everyday, I always look for new ones; this turtle buckles across a brown leather strap.
The scarf (inherited from my mom) is a nod to my namesake, Rebecca, from the Shopaholic book series. One of my favorite passages is where she perceives the power of garments to attract other people & even change lives. With each purchase Rebecca becomes alternately the girl in the green scarf/white coat/new jeans... She exemplifies the notion of clothes costuming our lives, enabling us to play a new cast of characters each day.

Lace Me

alice + olivia dress. Vintage belt & jewelry. Delman shoes.
Today saw the debut of my gold lace frock; its tiered ruffle hem renders the dress fundamentally girlie, but there's a hint of sportiness thanks to the racerback. I wish I wore more jewelry here, but I didn't have much time to accessorize this morning.
I live for new clothes... Lately I've been on a fur rampage, buying chubbies as if they're going out of style (I'm hunting for a knee length fur coat now). Fur is a classic, but it's also a trend for fall courtesy of fashion connoisseurs such as Anna Wintour & Rachel Zoe. Personal style supersedes trends (my closet is a conglomerate of haute bohemian/girlie/classic pieces)... Trends are fleeting, but style is eternal.

Golden Girl

Ralph Lauren jacket. 3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Chanel diamond earrings. Vintage costume pearl necklace worn as bracelet. Vintage costume stone ring. Roger Vivier shoes.
I topped this pink/gold brocade shift dress with a gray herringbone boy's blazer (shopping in the children's department satisfies both my wallet & girlish fantasies). I'm particularly fond of brocade; my rule for mixing patterns/fabrics is a complementary color scheme. I have several pairs of Chanel earrings, but I'll know I made it when I own a bag sanctioned by the brand's designer, Karl Lagerfeld.
Between students returning to school, the Jewish New Year & the fall fashion season (the industry's new year), September is a time for reflection & fresh beginnings... My resolutions include furthering my sartorial education & joining the fashion workforce in an official capacity.

Tie One On

Valentino Red jacket. 3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Vintage link belt. Costume flower earrings. Vintage costume pearl ring. Delman velvet shoes.
Today I took a client meeting at the Empire State Building in a sharp shouldered tuxedo jacket (complete with a lapel formed by an undone bow tie) & a blue ruched frock. I bought the chain cowboy belt at a tag sale in CT; my friend said they're all over Greece.
Next month my sister embarks on a three month holiday across the planet... I long to see the world but first must acquire a traveling wardrobe & a budget for souvenirs. In the meantime, I present my sister with a shopping list & wish her a bon voyage.

Little Red Riding Hood

Valentino Red jacket. Cynthia Steffe dress. Vintage costume tassel & owl necklaces. Costume amethyst ring. Chloé 'Sally' bag. Marc by Marc Jacobs ponyhair shoes.
I greeted Indian Summer from Central Park in a crochet minidress & a red jacket with a fur collar. The blazer reminds me of a riding jacket gussied up with fur; the dress' hem length approaches Edie Sedgwick-heights (one of my style icons) but is respectable with flats. Marc by Marc Jacobs produces a variation of these mouse shoes nearly every season.
Last night I saw The September Issue & fell further in love with Vogue; everything from the fashion shows to the photo shoots to the internal meetings were inspiring. Sometimes I keep a Vogue magazine because I like the cover but always retain the Sept issue. To work with Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, or André Leon Talley would be the pinnacle of professional success.

Where the Wild Things Are

Milly chubby. Pencey top. 3.1 Phillip Lim skirt. Vintage costume pearl necklace worn as belt. Chanel pearl earrings. Gold (a 14th birthday present) bangle. Les Néréids crystal (a souvenir from my trip to Paris) bracelet. Costume moonstone ring. YSL 'Muse' bag. Delman shoes.
Today I went to a brunch with my family on the Upper East Side, so I wore a ladies-who-lunch outfit. As I usually wear a dress, I'm choosy about my tops - the blouse's floral printed chiffon won me over. This faux fur chubby is special becuase it's the first one I ever bought (in fall 2007 - it must've sold well as the brand's designer, Michelle Smith, revived it the following year in beige & black). The jacket remains one of my favorites due to its creamy fur & a pink lining. It's funny how fur (from wild animals) is often associated with well-to-do women (who are not known for their tenacity in the great outdoors). The cooler seasons spur the so-called weaker sex to tame the beast... Who says fashion can't empower women?

White Lights, Big City

3.1 Phillip Lim jacket. Gold Hawk dress. Vintage flower headband. Vintage beaded & flower necklaces. Vintage mosaic & Les Néréids crystal (a souvenir from my trip to Paris) bracelets. Vintage costume stone ring. Lanvin shoes.
I requested this dress for my 22nd birthday as it reminded me of a piece from one of my all time favorite collections (look #33 from Chloé's spring 2007 fashion show). This military jacket may seem like a derivative of the first look from Balmain's spring 2009 collection because of its prevalence in the media... From magazine editorials to Beyonce, the blazer quite literally blazed a path for Christophe Decarnin's designs into the collective hearts of the fashion industry (including my girl crushes, Carine Roitfeld of French Vogue & her daughter, Julia). However, to give credit where it's due, this Phillip Lim jacket is from his fall 2008 collection, predating Mr. Decarnin's saturation of the market by one season.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Anna Sui dress. Chanel star earrings. Vintage costume stone & diamond rings. Vintage costume diamond bracelet. YSL 'Muse' bag. Marc by Marc Jacobs jean jacket (in bag). Delman shoes.
Tonight I attended the dual celebrations of Anna Sui's spring 2010 RTW fashion show afterparty/Rock Me fragrance launch at her boutique downtown. I wore this rainbow fields embellished dress (look #51 from the spring 2009 show) to show my support - it appears complicated but is comfortable to wear all day. Surrounded in the store by other latter day flower children dressed in pieces from Ms. Sui's present/previous collections, I took a moment to savor the experiences from the past two days... Thanks to the lovely ladies at Anna Sui for including me!

Anna Sui & Me

Anna Sui dress. Vintage costume pearl earrings. Costume flower ring. YSL 'Muse' bag. Roger Vivier shoes.
What a night! I attended the Anna Sui spring 2010 fashion show in look #14 from her fall 2009 collection. Another girl wore it too, but luckily she wasn't near my third row seat. Hamish Bowles of Vogue (dapper as ever in his new mustache & taking notes) & Amy Astley of Teen Vogue (smiling & chic in a navy/gold sequin stripe top) were among the front row guests. I had my camera with me but was so entranced with the scene I didn't snap a single picture (except for these photographs outside of the Tent).
My favorite pieces from Ms. Sui's new collection include both the lamé & patchwork sundresses - I love the juxtaposition of rich fabrics in summery shapes. The circus seems to be this fashion week's theme what with Ms. Sui's under the big top soundtrack/set background & Cathy Horyn's recent comparison of NY fashion week to a three-ring event in On The Runway. They evoke the metaphor of fashion as a circus to liken it to a distraction, a freak show, entertaining & awe inspiring... Ultimately it's more satisfying than cotton candy to those who worship at the runway.

Starry Night

Diane von Furstenberg jacket. Milly dress. Vintage woven belt. Vintage costume ball necklace. Vintage costume animal ring. Delman velvet shoes.
This Diane von Furstenberg sequin bed jacket is one of my favorites as it cheers up any outfit. It was also photographed on the March 2009 cover of Elle magazine as detailed on The City. The Chanel-esque two-tone tweed dress is one of my more sophisticated pieces.
I'm so excited because tomorrow night I was invited to attend Anna Sui's spring 2010 fashion show in the Tent. My hair is freshly cut & I have a new frock waiting in the wings - I'll share behind the scenes pictures here.

You Spin Me Round

Ralph Lauren jacket. Anna Sui top. 3.1 Phillip Lim skirt. Red belt. Vintage costume stone bracelet. Costume flower ring. Delman suede shoes.
Today I wore my khaki skirt backward (shifting the ruffles behind me & flattening the front) to create a simple backdrop for my frilly blouse. This doll-print Anna Sui top is part of her collection for Anthropologie. Recipient of the 2009 CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, Ms. Sui's designs consistently top my shopping list.
Recently some designers have created lower priced lines... While this brings fashion to the masses, it also raises the possibilityof diluting a brand's prestige & alienating its customers. I'd rather have something from Ms. Sui's runway than from her diffusion collection, but I wouldn't refuse one of her dresses for Target (if only they hadn't sold out immediately).

Queen of Hearts

3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Betsey Johnson belt. Bow hairclip. Vintage costume crystal necklace. Vintage costume braided bangles. Vintage costume flower bracelet. Lanvin bow shoes.
I wanted a red dress since I was a little girl & heard Sally sing about one on Wee Sing. Ruffles were a motif of Phillip Lim's spring 2009 collection as several pieces (including this frock) came adorned with them. The dress must have sold well as it's available in different colors for fall 2009. These Lanvin camel suede flats with black velvet bows on the toes are special because they are my first pair of shoes by the designer. My black bow hairclip is an homage to Alice from Alice in Wonderland & Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl.

Mellow Yellow

Helmut Lang tux. Marc by Marc Jacobs dress. Vintage jewelry. Delman shoes.
This cropped tuxedo jacket is my evening essential - I layer boyish pieces over femme frocks for the contrast. I love this dress for its yellow glitter hearts pattern, crystal circles & exposed zipper up the back. It was featured in several editorials during spring 2008 (including Teen Vogue, Harper's Bazaar & Glamour). Sometimes I see my clothes in magazines (which is satisfying), but I rarely make a purchase due to press alone... However, the Aug 2009 issue of Vogue inspired me to buy a Milly metallic floral dress.

Indecent Exposure

Twenty8Twelve dress. Milly slip. Black bead necklace worn as belt. Vintage costume gold necklace. Kenneth Jay Lane elephant bangle. Salvatore Ferragamo 'Vara' shoes.
Today I dived headfirst into fall's sheer trend with this white dress layered over a black slip; I'm not into clothes masquerading as lingerie, but I love anything resembling an old fashioned nightgown.
My Ferragamo flats whisper classic biddy while magenta screams (colorblind) Dorothy. A necklace wrapped twice around my waist cinches the look.
Celebrities with fashion lines often encounter flak, but I'm drawn to Twenty8Twelve (by Sienna & Savannah Miller) & The Row/Elizabeth & James (by Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen). I admire these girls' styles in real life, but more importantly they design clothing with a point of view that contributes to the fashion conversation.

Unzipped

3.1 Phillip Lim dress. Vintage leather belt. Vintage costume stone & mosaic bracelets. Vintage costume turquoise ring. Delman shoes.
This is my favorite dress of all time... It's special on several levels: the pink color complements the ruffles, which are actually zippers (lending the frock an industrial feel). Plus while it seems like an avant garde piece, the dress is ultimately easy to wear. Photographed in several magazines, I lusted after the dress until tracing it to the designer's store downtown.
My Fashion's Night Out sightings include Zac Posen, Martha Stewart & Alexander Wang at Bergdorf - it was satisfying to see the people I admire gathered in my favorite place (these pictures were snapped in the Armani dressing room). Mingling with the fashion crowd made me feel part of a cause - we were there out of love for the industry & a desire to see it flourish.

Shimmer & Shine

Vintage Eloise Curtis for Happenstance shell. Hanes top. Juicy Couture skirt. Vintage costume gold bangle. Vintage costume diamond bracelet. Vintage costume animal ring. Delman shoes.
My vintage top sparkles with the dreams of its past & future wearers. The immaculately preserved sequins (the holy grail of heirloom) are testament to the care of my predecessors. I dipped my toe in fall with this cashmere skirt - I love when fabrics are used unexpectedly. Tomorrow I'll be part of history in the making with Fashion's Night Out at Bergdorf... I long for an Anna Wintour sighting but will settle for the Olsen twins.
